Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MSTAT4016 - Cut and sew design prototypes

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for prototype cutting and sewing

  1. Collect and organise relevant information on design prototype
  2. Review information and identify potential construction challenges and constraints
  3. Prepare and adjust machines according to specifications for work
  4. Obtain and check pattern pieces against specification
  5. Check fabric width, quality and layout in preparation for pattern placement
  6. Lay out pattern pieces on fabric for most efficient fabric use and secure or chalk to the fabric to match fabric pattern, nap and weave
  7. Identify issues and options to achieve best outcome and liaise with others involved in the design and production process
  8. Safely use equipment to cut fabric to specifications

Sew garment components

  1. Lay out garment components according to sequence of operations
  2. Select and use sewing techniques to assemble components
  3. Check garment for sizing and appearance
  4. Identify issues and options to achieve best outcome and liaise with others involved in the design and production process
  5. Adjust garment to better display design characteristics and other features
  6. Select and use garment finishing techniques specified in the design
  7. Press garment according to fabric requirements and garment construction details
  8. Complete final quality check against original design concept
  9. Note any assembly issues and inform appropriate personnel
